Apologies. In the last blog I stated that I had Covered all the Sides except the one with the Button. Actually I had left the Lid of the Box as I thought it would be thick enough without another layer.

Pin Measure

Before I start adding Colour Cloth I Measure it and stick some Pins in to roughly Mark where I want to Cover to.

I start Gluing some Deep Blue Denim at the Top. This is going to represent the Sky.

Move Across

I Overlap the Cloth and Move down the Lid. I then add another piece to Move Across. I don’t need to put it all the way across as I have something else to go there.

Camouflage Bottom

I have a nice piece of Camouflage Cloth to Glue at the Bottom. This is the start of the Land.

Move Up

I have some small pieces of Cloth that I can use to Move Up towards the Sky. That is the good thing with my boyfriend being so tall I get so much Material out of his old Trousers.

Around the Bend

I have down one Face of the Box. I am going to Wrap the Material Around the Bend and to the other side of the Box.

All Six Sides

With the big pieces done and dried I carried on with the small Edges. I now have all Six Sides finished.

Okay I am now having a panic attack. My mother reminded me that old Ironing Board’s used to use Asbestos and I have been merrily Cutting it up and got pieces everywhere.

I have done some research and as far as I can tell mine isn’t that old. However now I cannot stop thinking about it and have decided to give it an extra Cover.

Pile of Pieces

I have emptied my craft cupboard and have a huge Pile of Pieces to sort through. I am sure that I have something big enough to Cover the Box.

Black to Basics

I have found some Basic Black Material. I have measured it and have enough.

Good Spread

I give the White a Good Spread of Glue making sure it gets into all the Corner. I will Cover five Sides and leave the one with the Push Button. This is because I don’t want to make it to difficult to open by covering it with too much cloth.

Hate It

Grr I Hate it when it does this. I had forgotten how porous the Material was. It is a good job that this is just the springboard for the real Covering.

Greetings. Again I must apologise for delayed posting. I have a new laptop and am having to learn how to use it along with the updated Windows.

Brilliant Brasso

Now all the Deburring has been done I need to Polish. So with the purchase of some Brasso I am ready to start. This tin has the wadding in so no need to look for cloths

Mucky Sword

With such a big object it took me several goes to cover it all. Here is a photograph that shows it covered with Brasso.

Shiny Sword

Above is a photograph with the Sword all Shiny along with its Sheath. Note for future. Remember to put paper down because when I lifted the Mucky Sword I had a lovely Sword Pattern in Brasso on the carpet. This is another reason why I had to Polish more than once.

Arabian Dagger

So whilst I had the Brasso out I thought it was a good time to do the other Pointy Pieces I had around. This is an Arabian Dagger that I picked up on Holiday in Tunisia.

Arabian Polish

Here is the Arabian Dagger Polished. To be honest the Blade was not that bad. It was the Handle and Cover that need the work as they had been exposed to the elements.

Letter Openers

Finally here are some Letter Openers. These Blades were in Bad Condition due to the fact they were covered in bits of Sellotape. They took nearly as much work as the Sword. 

All my Pointy Pieces are as good as new. The only thing now is to tackle cleaning the Carpet!

With the Chaise Longue and Footstool looking nice I just had to do the Mini Footstool too.

Red Footstool

 

The Mini Footstool is sturdier than the other Footstool and will have to be covered properly rather than a Slipcover.

Initial Pins

 

First I check how much material I need by a Corner with a couple of Pins. I need to be able to Cover the Centre and the Edges.

Glue Top

 

I spread the Glue all over the Top of the Mini Footstool so I can begin sticking the material.

Glue and Pin Front

 

I Glue what I am going to refer to as the Front of the Mini Footstool. I then proceed to carefully place the material over that so it Covers the Edge.

Next I place the material over the Glued Top of Stool. I then put a couple of Pins in the Front to hold whilst drying.

Glue and Pin Sides

 

I Glue and Pin the material along the Sides of the Mini Footstool.

Glue Left

 

That was the easy bit. I now have to make the Edges look neat. I am going to do that by Folding the Corner around from the Front.

I Glue the Triangular Shape and Press it tight against the Side keeping the Bottom Edge level.

The material on the Right Side which would be coming off the Rear of the Stool was slightly long. I Cut and Hemmed this part prior to Gluing and Pinning.

I am going to continue to try and blend my furniture together so I am having a go at this IKEA Footstool. If it goes wrong it doesn’t really matter because I have had it for years and it only cost me 50p in the first place.

Footstool

 

Apart from wanting to blend in this Navy Footstool I have another reason for wanting to Cover it. The Zip is broken so I can no longer wash it.

Flip Side

 

I am not strictly measuring this material it is the one that I that I rejected for the Chaise Longue Curve. I Flip the Cushion and place on the material.

Fold Over

 

If you look in the above photograph you can see that I haven’t placed the Cushion directly in the Centre. This is because I want to avoid the Mark. 

Sew Bottom

 

Once Folded over I Sew across the Bottom. As you can probably tell from the above photograph this isn’t going to be fully enclosed. I am having this as a Slip Cover.

Next I Fold Over the Bottom and Sew along the Edge. I repeat this at the Opposite End.

Chaise and Stool

Chaise and Stool together. I think they look rather natty.

With two parts done I am moving on to the Front and Curve. I have to admit that the Front part was fine. However the Curve both Sides was a complete pig of a job. This is how I did it minus the cursing.

Glue Front

 

The Front Flat part was quite simple. I first applied plenty of Glue. This was not only to the Flat part but over the Curved Edges as well.

Cover Front

 

I Cut a large piece of material roughly shaped and fitted it on to the Flat part. I then smoothed it onto the Edged areas. The rest of the Edge will be Covered whilst doing the Curved area.

I was not happy with the first Piece I cut. Not only did it have a Mark right where you can see it but also it didn’t fit as far across as I wanted.

Rather than waste the material I put it aside to use at a later date. If you look at the photograph above you will see that this is before I had Covered the Backboard

Hem Curve

 

After Cutting another Piece which was not only Wider but also more than twice as Long I put it in position. This is so I could see what parts need to be Hemmed. Before I Glued it into position I Covered the Plastic Part with material knowing that this Piece would cover the rough parts.

I could now Glue the Curved Piece into Place. Once done I Tucked the Bottom Part in with the Base.

Side Section Covered

Originally I was going to Cover this in 2 Parts. I was going to have the material go over the Curve and Finish after it Flattened. Then I was going to add a Second Piece down the Side.

Since I had to Recut the material I decided to make it Full Length. I Glued the material on the Curved part and left to dry. I then Glued the lower part. To give extra security I part Sewed it to the Edge.

I must admit I was very pleased how this section turned out.

Sometimes you have to leave a project for a while in this case several years. I have posted the link for the last blog on this at the bottom.

Black Legs

 

Ill health has prevented me from doing really big jobs but I had a spot of energy and decided to crack on with a spot of maintenance whilst I was doing some Glossing.

I turned the Chaise Longue upside down and proceeded to Paint the Legs. Whilst doing this I made a discovery. I had some excess Material on the Base. This gave me an idea.

Cat Scratcher

 

My dear beloved Cat Electra had passed across the veil quite a few years ago. However evidence of her presence still remained. When she wasn’t using my leg she had decided that my Chaise Longue made a much better Cat Scratcher than the one she already had. Despite my best efforts the Legs and Front had become a Chat Chaise Longue.

Cut Material

 

I took a pair of Scissors and carefully Cut the Material. I didn’t want to Cut too close or I might end up having to repair the back to.

Partial Covering

 

I had the Material but unfortunately it wasn’t the correct Shape. Therefore I had to use a Patchwork system to try and cover as much as I could with as few Cuts as possible.

I decided the best way to Cover the damage was to Stick the Material on the area. I used Fabric Glue to place the Pieces on the Front. I sometimes had to manoeuvre these about around the Curves which is why I didn’t use Super Glue

Fully Covered

 

The above photograph shows the final result. It is not Purrfect by any means. It is however much better than it was before. It has also given me new confidence in trying to recover the entire Chaise Longue.

Why do I do these things to myself? The Belt was pretty easy compared to what I have to do next.

Steampunk Hat Base

 

I had several Ideas regarding how to make the Hat including using card and Foam. However I decided it was far too much to accomplish in the given time just to get the Base.

I therefore went on a Hat Hunting expedition and found what apparently is called a Pork Pie Hat for £1 in a charity shop.

Pool of Glue

 

Once again I raided Laura’s for both decorations and advice. The latter I promptly ignored. She thought the material was fine as it was saying it looked like leather even though it was plastic she made me laugh by calling it ‘Pleather’.

However I couldn’t abide it as it was so remembering she said that Steampunk was an expression of oneself I decided that I wouldn’t be true to myself if I didn’t cover it. Sorry Laura but you cannot alter a habit of 40 years that easily.

Cotton Cover

So after filling the Top part of the Hat with Glue I covered it with Black Cotton material and smoothed it down. I wanted to keep the Top Shape if I could.

It took a while for the Top to dry but once it had I spread the rest of the Hat with Glue. I then Covered it as best I could.

Fold Under

 

When selecting the material I cut a large piece so there would be enough to Fold Under the Hat.

The Front of the Hat was now Covered.

Wrap around

In order to do the Sides of the Hat I had to pull the material taut and do a little bit of Folding. I cut off the Excess and smoothed it down. I now had a fully Covered Hat Base.

The next part of making the Cover is adding the Press Studs

Add Press Studs

I started at where the Top of the Cover will be. I Sewed the Right Hand Press Stud part on first (Photograph Facing). I then added the Left Hand part on the other side. There is a reason for this which I will explain later.

Press Stud Mistake

 

Another mistake due to not paying attention. When Sewing the Press Stud in place I went through both parts of the material. I had to unpick and redo.

Triple Press Studs

I have now Sewn three of the Right Hand Side Press Stud Parts onto the material. The reason I am doing it this way is if you look at the above photograph you can clearly see the slope.

This meant that the other side could not be in a straight line. The further down the other side of the material I went the more to the Left I had to place the rest of the Press Studs.

End of Slip Cover

I have now all the Press Stud Parts Sewn on to the material. Next I have to deal with the End of the Slip Cover.

Fold Canvas Bottom

I have quite a bit of material left at the Bottom. I either could cut off and Re-hem or try to Fold the material to make it smaller. I decided on the latter approach.

I pushed the Sides in towards the Centre. This is a bit like wrapping a present.

Sew Fold Together

 

I then Sewed the Fold together.

Sew Bottom Edge

 

After I Sewed the two pieces together I Folded the remaining Edges together and Sewed those making a nice Flat Edge Bottom.

Lollipop Finished

The Lollipop is now finished and it needs to be wrapped in time for giving for Yule.
