Autumn Cape Bag 2022 Part 37

Autumn Cape Bag 2022 Part 37

This week I am struggling with a wracking cough and cold. However, I have managed to get some work done on the Flap.

First Strengthener

In the last blog, I had completed my first Strengthener, which by the red lines I am getting in the text leads me to believe that I have invented a new word.

Part Hemmed

I have Part Hemmed the second piece of Material. I have left one side Unhemmed.

Double Thread

To make it a stronger bond I used Double the Thread. I started to attach the Material with a Blanket Stitch. I know I used a temporary Tacking Stitch on the other piece but I simply forgot.

Excess Amount

I have completed Sewing one Side. As you can see in the above photograph, there is quite an Amount of Excess Material.

Autumn Cape Bag 2022 Part 36

Autumn Cape Bag 2022 Part 36

I am moving on to Strengthening the Flap.

Flap

I have quite a large Flap to Strength. I am not sure if I have enough Material.

Green Material

I have found the Green Material and I measured it against the Flap. As I suspect when allowing for Hemming it may not be enough. I am going to have to divide into sections.

Green Pinked

I have Hemmed all the way around the Material. However, I find that it Frays quite Badly. I have had to find my Pinking Scissors to do the edge.

Needle Ends

Hm. I think that by turning the Material around that I now have too much. It is not easy the way the Wool keeps Stretching. I have decided to Sew using a Tacking Stitch. I am going to do this using a Needle from both Ends.

This way I can Judge how much Wool to Material there is and make adjustments accordingly. Otherwise, I might end up with a big Bunch at one end.

Top Attached

The Top is now fully Attached. It has a little bit of Bunching here and there but nothing I cannot manage.

Green Pleat

I have now Sewn the Top and both Sides with a Tacking Stitch. It has helped stop some of the rolling. However, there is definitely too much Material.

I am solving this by adding a couple of Pleats. I am not going to Sew these in place yet. Nor am I going to Sew across the Bottom.

Autumn Cape Bag 2022 Part 35

Autumn Cape Bag 2022 Part 35

Technically my Bag is now usable. However, I want to tidy it up.

Sort Leaves

Before I can do anything I need to Sort out my Leaves and see what Colours I have. I may need to make some more.

Pin Leaves

I start to Pin the Leaves in place ready for Sewing.

Inside Out

Some of the Leaves are quite hard to get to, especially the further down the Bag you go. For these I turn the Top of the Bag Inside Out. This makes it much easier.

Yellow Hole

I have found a Yellow Hole. By the looks of it is the result of a dropped Stitch, which I did not pick up correctly.

Hole gone

I Sew the Hole together. I then place a Leaf over it to hide the Mistake.

Yellow Problem

I have found another Yellow Problem.

Problem Fixed

Again, I Cover the Mistake with a Leaf. I try where possible to use different Coloured Leaves to help break up large blocks of Colour.

Autumn Cape Bag 2022 Part 34

Autumn Cape Bag 2022 Part 34

When working on a project like this things take a great deal of time. Consequently, I can struggle to get enough photographs to make up a blog. This time I have too many so going to split into two or more.

Pin Top

I know have the Top part finished. I have had to Pin it to keep it from rolling while I work out the next Step.

Sew L Shape

I have decided to Sew the Top to the Side rather than Fold it, which was my original idea. This will create an L Shape. Before I do this, however I will Sew the loose parts of the Strap that I had left together.

 Strap Bottom

Ok I confess I have not a clue what this was supposed to be. This is one of the problems when blogging. Sometimes you have moved on so far you have forgotten what point in the order of things the photograph was taken.

All Attached

I have now attached everything and it has made that section much stronger. Now for the other side.

Autumn Cape Bag 2022 Part 33

Autumn Cape Bag 2022 Part 33

Annoyingly because I have been let down by somebody I cannot get to what I need. Therefore, I am having another swap around. Therefore, this will be a short blog

Adding Stitches

I am starting on the Other Side of the Bag. I have currently picked up 58 Stitches. I need to add 2 more, one at either end on the Knit Row. I then continue with a Purl Row.

Selvedge

I have decided to add a Selvedge... I have used these before. However, as a bit curious I decided to look up what this particular Style of Selvedge is. This is what I found.

French Style

On the right side slip, the first stitch knit -wise knit to the end. On the wrong side slip the first stitch purl-wise and purl to end.

Cast Off and Tails

The Selvedge did not flatten the work as I had hoped. Perhaps I should have used a different type. On the other hand, maybe it will be fine once pressed. In either case, I have now Cast Off and need to Sew in the Tails.
