Dying Dilemma 2025 Part 11

With the Coins ready I can begin to Sew

Careful of Underskirt

The first thing I need to remember is to be Careful of the Underskirt. I don’t want to Sew the Coin through both as it will limit the ability of it to flow.

Start Sewing

I Sew up through the Bottom of the Trim and out at the Top. I then Sew through the Bottom again. It is basically a Backstitch. I then reinforce with a few more Stitches at the back.

Sewn to Spot

Now I have Sewn the Coin to the Spot I can remove the Pin.

What Happened?

Okay What the hell Happened? The Coin seems to be a couple of Inches out of line of the Toggles. I can only think that somehow when I lifted the Underskirt I must have Pinned it wrong.

Now I have the Coin Jingles I can make a start

Skirt

I take the Skirt and spread it out so I can see.

Undo Tassels

I Undo the Tassels as I am going to start on the Second Trim

Find the Needle

Since I am using a full Embroidery Thread I need to find the right Needle. It needs to hold the Thread but not damage the Skirt.

Pin to Start

I line up the Toggles and place a Pin in where I am going to start.

The Toggles are finally dry and I am no longer getting ink on my fingers so are ready for use.

Extra Loop

 

I have Knitted another I-Cord and Sewn it to form a Loop. I have added the Extra Loop in the Centre of the others.

Mark with Pins

 

I need to match up the Toggles with the Loops. This is not as straightforward as the other side as the Material Length is slightly Wider. I have placed the Material and Marked with Pins where the Toggles should be Sewn

Three Toggles

 

I decided to use the Original Toggles first. I have Sewn them at the two ends and in the Centre.

Vertical Toggles

 

I have encountered a problem. I had been so concerned about making sure the Loops were Sewn on the thicker Material that I had not thought about the amount of space between.

Therefore, I have Sewn the new Toggles Vertically. Perhaps losing a Toggle and having to use Smaller ones has become an advantage.

Finished Toggles

 

I have Finished Sewing all the Toggles in place. Whilst not perfect I am satisfied with the End result.

It never rains but it pours.

Toggle Problem

 

Okay I have a problem. I did have extra Wooden Toggles and now I am short. I think that they must have dropped on the floor and been swallowed up by the Hoover.

I searched for any Toggles that I might have in my button collection. I have some but they are completely the wrong Colour. I know these are going to be on the Inside but even so, I like to try my best.

Marked Toggles

 

I am going to have to Colour some Toggles to try to match them better. The Toggles that I have are some that I have taken off an item. Unfortunately, they have become Marked. Therefore, I have selected ones that seem to be the worst to be used.

Coloured Toggles

 

I have Coloured the Toggles in with a Permanent Marker Pen. As you can see in the above photograph, they are now much darker. If they were to be on show, I would not have been happy with the overall result.

However since they are not it does not matter too much. The Thread will cover the light areas. The next problem to tackle is the fact that they are smaller than the others are. I have therefore decided that I will add an extra Loop. This should help spread the weight.

On to the next set of Loops

Four Loops

 

I have spaced out the Loops differently on the Strengthener. This is because it has extra Material on the Outer Edges. I may need to add another Loop for more support.

Thumb Joint

 

Before I can add the Toggles, I need to make a Stronger Hem. I Fold it over so it is roughly a Thumb Joint Width.

Hem Across

 

I proceeded to Hem it all the way Across. Then I went to add the Toggles. However at least one has gone walkies. I need to rethink this. Either buy some more or find one the same size in a different Colour.

Bumpy Yellow

 

Whilst I am sorting out the Toggles, I decided to do something about the nasty Bumpy Yellow patch that I have spotted.

Nice and Neat

 

On closer inspection, there was more than one section of Yellow that needed addressing. Therefore, I added two Leaves, an Orange one on the Right and a Golden Yellow on the Left.

Once again, I have been plagued with difficulties. This time it is not illness although that is still on going. I had found several areas that needed covering with more leaves.

Three times, I had nearly finished making one and three times, I had to start again because I found the Wool had Frayed. So annoying.

Slightly Wonky

The book Measuring had worked out better. It is still Slightly Wonky but it does not need to be perfect. Anyway, I did Unpick some and redo it.

Cut Excess

Now I can finally Cut away the Excess. I had started it then stopped, as I was not sure if I needed to go all the way along to the End. Consequently, it has been a pain in my side flapping around whilst trying to Measure and Sew

The reason why I was not sure about the Length is because one of the Strengtheners is higher on one side than the other. So far from being too long, it may in fact be a little short.

Double Hem

 

Since there is the Weight factor to take into consideration, I have decided to Fold over and Make a Double Hem. Now I can move on to making adding the Toggles.

I really feel like I have finally turned a corner and the Bag is coming into its own.

I-Cords

 

I had a couple of I-Cords left over and rather than Unpick them I had hung on to them. Now I can put them to use.

Sew on Cords

 

I Sewed the I-Cords approximately an Inch in from the Edge.

Lip Folded

 

I Folded the Lip of the Flap Over and Secured the I-Cords by Sewing across. Roughly, a centimetre either side. Then I Sewed all the way from one side to another.

Toggles Completed.

I had Two Large Toggles which I Sewed approximately a third of the way down the Bag. This is so there is a little give in the Flap for when the Bag has things inside it.

The year 2020 was for me the year of the Face Mask! I have finally managed to put away my Sewing and get my Knitting back out.

Matching Fox Overlap

 

Frankly it was so long since I have worked on this project I had to go back and read my blog - Autumn Cape – A Long Term Project 2019 Toggle & Loops to remember where I left off.

After I sorted out my Needle and I-Cords I got my Cape and opened it fully. I then Folded over the Fox Side so the Loops Matched where the Toggles were on the Badger Side Interior.

Sewing Fox Overlap

 

With the Tail of the I-Cord I Sewed it Opposite the Adjoining Loop. I Sewed it through itself as well as the Wool.

I then double checked that the Tie would hold. There was plenty of Cord left to make a Double Tie if I wished.

I decided that for now at least I was only going to Sew in One Tie on that Side and see how it held when I was wearing it. This is because with the extra Rows on the Top of the Overlap I didn’t want to throttle myself with it being too high.

I repeated the process with the Opposite Side. You may notice in the above photograph that the Wool used is a slightly different colour. Therefore I had to be extremely careful not to go completely through the other Side.

With so many projects on the go it seems that I never have time to finish the one I started a few years ago. This is quite annoying as it is getting so close to being a finished item.

Toggles Badger Side

For quite some time I have been unhappy with the Toggles on the Interior. I have difficulty keeping one Tied whilst trying to do the next one.

I also haven’t as yet decided how to Tie the Interior further up. As you can see in the photograph above only 4 Toggles are Sewn on.

Unravelled

I decided to make some more I-Cords. These were to be used as either replacements or as additional securing. However since they are Knitted on Double Ended Needles whilst travelling this particular one decided to completely Unravel.

4 I-Cords

I Knitted 4 I-Cords. Since this was going to be a Trial and Error basis I didn’t measure them. They are roughly the same Length as a Motorola G Mobile for those who are technical.

Testing Tie

I next Tested the I-Cord for Length. I wanted to make sure that it would Tie after it had been Sewn on. If they were massively to Long I could simply Unravel and make Shorter Ties.

The next step is to Sew one Tie into place and decided whether to use the Toggles or to Remove them from the Interior.

I wasn’t too sure what name to give this blog as it deals with the Summer Cape and Toggles. I will let you decided which series of blogs it belongs with.

Summer Cape Gap Width Problem

I have a bit of a Gap Width problem with my Summer Cape. This is a result of two problems. One is that I have put on weight a bit of weight since it was originally made. The second problem is that with it being reclaimed yarn it has a tendency to stretch.

Unfortunately the belt I made to pull the edges together is no longer sufficient and I am going to come up with something else.

I-Cord and Loop

In order to combat the increasing gap and it falling off my shoulders I have decided to add fastenings to it. Luckily I have some of the cotton I used to knit the edging left.

I wasn’t quite sure exactly how much cord I needed. Therefore I knitted a test piece of approximately 7cm.I then sewed the tail ends together to make a Loop.

Toggle Sewn

I used the edge of the brown and grey as a marker and sewed on one of the Toggles I had taken off the Green Winter Cape.

Loop Sewn

Using the same marking point I sewed on a Loop on the underside of the opposite edging.

Pin Markers

Next I measured roughly 6 cm between each Toggle and marked the place with a pin. I then sewed each Toggle and Loop in place.

The Toggles were fine but the Loops looked awful. Therefore I unpicked them and reattached on the Front.

Toggles and Loops Finished?

I now have six Toggles and Loops in place. As you can see I haven’t put them all the way down. I am going to try it like this and see how I get along.

If I need more fastenings I will have to soak the other Toggles first. This is because most of them have dye marks from being on the Winter Cape. – Watch this space.
