Face Mask 2020 Part 4

Face Mask 2020 Part 4

Definitely a blog that shows that ‘More Haste, Less Speed’.

Fold Back

Finally got some Elastic so time to make an Elasticated Mask. Curve one End of the Elastic under itself and Sew.

Measure

Next Measure the amount of Elastic needed (I put it around my ear then marked with a Pin) then repeat making sure the Elastic has not twisted.

Fold and Pin

I still had too much Elastic. I had Folded it back again on itself but it was still too loose. I therefore cut some off and redid it but it still hung down my Face rather than across. I was getting fed up not to mention sore fingers. Therefore I decided to fold back the material rather than the Elastic.

Merman

Needless to say that this was not the look I was going for. Unless you are planning on making a Merman or some kind of Alien Mask don’t do this.

Not Quite Right

This is getting silly. I have already made a few Elastic Masks for my mother albeit slightly slimmer ones. I had no trouble with them so why am I having problems now?

Uneven Material

First problem I found when I put the Elastic together was I spotted that the material was uneven.

Back to the Drawing Board

Therefore I had to start back at the beginning with a new Hem. This time I Measured and Pinned all the way across. I then reattached the Elastic

Face Mask 2020 Part 3

I try to show people how to make things with what they might have. Here is a slightly quicker way if you have longer Ties available.

Pin Tie

Instead of Sewing each individual Tie. Pin one piece to the End of the Mask. Then move the Tie Left or Right until you are sure it is Central.

Fold and Sew Tie

Then Fold the Edge of the Mask over and Sew along the length and at the Ends. Then Sew the Ends of the Ties if needed.

Face Outline

Every time you make a Mask check the Facial measurements if you are going to add Embellishments.

Rough Cat Sketch

As what I have in mind is more complicated I made a Rough Sketch on paper before drawing on the material.

Black Background

I have cut, Hemmed and Sewn the Black Background for the Face. I have also cut and Centred the White Cheeks and Pinned in place.

Pin Tongue

I have cut out the Tongue and slipped it underneath the Cheeks. I then Pin it in place to check position. Next I Fold back the Cheeks and Sew the Tongue in place.

Sew Cheeks

Next I position the Nose. I decide to Sew the Cheeks then Pin and Sew the Nose in place.

Warning. – When making a Design that calls for multiple parts make sure that you are not overlapping too much. The more layers there are the more difficult it will be to Breathe through.

Pin Cat Cheeks

To add the final touches I use Pins to Mark where I think the Whiskers should go. I then place the Thread on Top of the Cheeks and realign where necessary.

Complete Cat Mask

I Backstitch the Whiskers in place and there we have it a Purrfect Cat Mask.

Face Mask 2020 Part 2

I now have a Plain Mask. However I think it is a bit boring so I am going to Embellish it.

Nose and Edge Pins

I have had an inspiration about what Design to put on the Mask but first I need some dimensions. I fold the Mask in Half and mark the Centre with a Pin. I then put the Mask to my nose and bend it towards my ear. I then mark both Sides with a Pin.

Jawline Pins

I next open the Mask up again and carefully Tie it around my face. I Pin the Rough Shape of my Jawline.

Rough Drawing

With a Pencil I Draw Roughly the Outline of the Image I want on my Mask.

White Felt

I cut out and Pin a piece of White Felt to the Mask. I then Sew it in place using a Backstitch.

Backstitch Teeth

Once the Felt is Sewn I can begin to create the Detail. Using ordinary Black Thread I Outline the Shape of Teeth in a Mouth. This is again using Backstitch.

Infill Teeth

I Sew all the Upper Teeth in the Mouth. I then begin to do the same on the Bottom. However this time I have to Infill the Gaps in-between the Teeth.

Highlight Teeth

As I am going along I notice that in comparison to the Gaps the Outlines of the Teeth are rather insipid. I therefore go over them again to Highlight them.

Red Felt Layer

I cut out small sections of Red Felt and Pin them in place. Once I have the complete Outline I Backstitch around the Inner and Outer Edges with Red Thread.

Jane the Joker

The above photograph shows the finished Mask. I just couldn’t resist adding a bit of Green to my Hair. Voila Jane as the Joker. Hope it brings a smile to others.

Face Mask 2020

Face Mask 2020

In these unusual times we are having to be more safety conscious. Most people are wearing some kind of Face Covering when they have to go out. I have been using a Wool Scarf but with the weather heating up I need to find something cooler.

Materials

First of all I need some materials. I have some Plain Canvas Material and some Ties that are from an old Canvas Wardrobe.

Tie Material

I am adding Ties to the Mask as unfortunately I do not have any thin Elastic. I need 4 Ties. One Tie at the Top and Bottom of Each Side.

Pre Tie Material

If you need to make Ties from scratch the above photograph shows how the Tie is formed. The Length is approximately Ear to Ear.

Sew Tie

I only have 3 ready-made Ties so I am having to Sew the 4th. I have trimmed the other Ties to the same Length and I am making this one the same Length

Hem Tie End

Next I have to Hem the Ends. Using the Stitching as a guide I Hem 2 Tie Ends Facing and 2 Hem Ends the Opposite way around. Note that I have only Hemmed 4 Ends and not 8.

5 and a Half Inches

The Width of the Canvas is 5 and a Half Inches. This is to give a generous amount to Hem.

19 and a Half Inches

The Length of the Canvas is 19 and a Half Inches. This is way more than I need but I have a small Head so others might need more. Also although I am lucky enough to have one side already Hemmed I will have to Sew the other side.

Pin Hems

I Pin the Hems ready for Sewing. In the above photograph you can see that I have not Pinned right to the end. This is because before Sewing I want to check how much Material I actually need.

In order to avoid making the mistake I did make sure you turn the Material the other way around before measuring it against your Face. Having a Pin nearly go up your nose is not fun!

Pin Ties

I had to cut off a couple of Inches prior to Sewing the Hems. I am now able to add the Ties. First of all I Pin them in Place. I make a few holding Stitches to secure them.

I then remove the Pins and Fold the Hem over and Sew. This is why I did not need to Hem the other Ends of the Ties. I repeat this on the other End of the Mask.

Finished Plain Mask

Here we have one Finished Plain Face Mask. If I decide that it is a little too Large all I have to do is Fold the Tie Hem over and Sew to shorten it – Doing this on both sides is preferable.
