Back Up Masks 2020

Back Up Masks 2020

A short blog this week but never the less quite a useful one. We are having to wear Face Masks in more and more places as the Lock Down eases.

However if like me you wear Glasses you spend half your time wiping the Mist off them caused by breathing. Here is a Tip to avoid that.

Hemmed Cloth

I took one of the Masks I made in this case the Joker one. I cut a length of Cloth a little Longer than the Mask. This is to allow for Hemming.

The Height of the material was roughly three quarters of the Mask. This again was to allow for Hemming.

Sewn Cloth

After Hemming the Cloth I Sewed it to the Top of the Mask. I Sewed the Sides of the Cloth but not the Bottom. This is very important.

The Canvas I have been using for the Masks after a few Washes was beginning to Fray. Adding this extra Layer not only stops this but also adds more protection from Germs.

Tissue Envelope

I repeated the process with the Bottom Half of the Mask. This made an Envelope. Since the Mask is quite Long I used a piece of Kitchen Towel to Fold up and place inside.

I tried the Mask on and found that it had worked and I had no longer Glasses covered with Mist.

N.B

If you are worried about the Tissue falling out you can always sew the Flaps part way either side.

A Comfy Candy Cane Christmas 2019 Part 3

A Comfy Candy Cane Christmas 2019 Part 3

The Candy Cane is Dry so I can start adding the Yarn. I haven’t taken dozens of photographs of this as it would be extremely tedious. The process involved winding White and Red Yarn over the Cane at a slant and Gluing as I went.

Candy Cane Hook End

I am putting extra Yarn near the Hook end as that is where the Hand will be resting. However I have hit a snag. No matter how many times I have done this the Tip will just fall off.

Sew Single Yarn Thread

This is a bit of a nightmare. Since it is full of Foam the Needle will simply not go through with the Yarn. Therefore I have had to Unply the yarn until I have a Single Thread.

This I then Thread through the Needle and sew into the Foam. I have to do this Four times.

Candy Cane Bottom

Since my hands were aching from fighting with the Hook I switched to the Bottom. The Yarn was beginning to come away so I had to Re-Glue. You can just see the loose Yarn Threads at the top of the above photograph.

Hook Plied Yarn

Now all Four Threads were through I could Re-Ply them and pull through. This took some considerable force. However once this was secured the Yarn stayed put whilst I wound and Glued it.

Candy Cane Complete

The Candy Cane is now Complete. Once it is Dry it will be ready for Wrapping.

A Comfy Candy Cane Christmas 2019 Part 2

A Comfy Candy Cane Christmas 2019 Part 2

One thing I don’t think I have touched upon is how difficult it is to blog my projects. Although I upload and label the photographs at the time sometimes it is weeks before I write the actual blog.

This means I have dozens of similar photographs to go through and it can literally take me hours to work out which ones were in a particular order. After that I have to sort them into some kind of understandable format. This is one of those blogs.

Fold Over-Pin Near Edge

I am quite confident this should be the first photograph. I have trimmed and shaped the top part of the material. Then I have glued and smoothed it. In order to keep it taut I have Pinned it near the Edge.

Hem Length of Cane

Next I Hem the Length of the Cane

Hem Curve of Cane

After I have Hemmed the Length I can begin to Hem the Curve of the Hook. I could not Hem this in one section as I needed to cut the material so it would Bend to fit the Curvature.

Cut and Hem Underside

I can see what Length the material on the top has taken since it has been Hemmed. Now I can work out how much material is required to meet it. I therefore Cut and Hem the Underside material.

Pin Sides

I then Hemmed, Glued and Pinned Side in Place. You may notice that in the above photograph the Tip of the Hook has been part Sewn in order to hold those pieces of material in place.

Pin Hook

Once the Glue was dry I Folded the Hook Part over Glued and pinned.

I would like to apologise at this point as the photographs of the Bottom of the Cane didn’t come out. I am hopeful that you can extrapolate the process from the information so far.

Sew Hook Flap Together

Once all the Gluing was finished and now completely dry I began to Sew all along the Length. I then Sewed along the Hook of the Cane.

A Comfy Candy Cane Christmas 2019 Part 1

A Comfy Candy Cane Christmas 2019 Part 1

If you remember in my blog ‘A Comfy Candy Christmas 2019 Part 1’ I had cut out two Foam pieces. This blog is about continuing with the Candy Cane.

Candy Cane Canvas

I found a piece of Canvas that is large enough to cover both sides of the Cane.

Candy Cane Corner

I start by putting the Foam as far over on the Canvas as possible then Pin the Corner.

Candy Cane Trimmed

I Trimmed off the excess material to make it easier to work with. I also Trimmed off a few extraneous pieces of Foam.

Glue Foam

I flip the Foam and Glue along the Back and Side prior to Covering.

Pin Edge

I make sure that after I have Covered the Edge I Pin it tightly so it doesn’t slip

Pin Folded Material

I then Fold the material and put it smooth. I then Pin and leave to dry.
